Serving My Hometown…
It is a real honor to serve my hometown as Mayor; and I am thankful for your support as we continue our work to help make this community better every day.
During my time as Mayor, I have tried to represent Portland with integrity and dignity, all in an effort to promote the very best of what we all hold dear to our hearts.
We are so fortunate, not only live in America, but to live right here; and I am fully convinced that the blessings God Almighty has bestowed upon us are to be used to bless the coming generations.
Each election is a great opportunity to exercise American freedom and to choose those who represent us, and I encourage each one to participate.
Portland, Tennessee has much to offer; and I am excited about our future together.
So, I ask that you join with me in helping to make a positive impact each and every day; because I truly believe that Portland is a GREAT place to be!
Leadership Approach
Every day is an opportunity to lead, serve, and encourage; and each of those opportunities are unique. But whether it is meeting with a resident, a developer, or an employee, maintaining a consistent approach to leadership is important.
If not on a daily basis, staff hears one of two sayings from me on a weekly basis – “All problems are people problems, because the problem is personal”, and “Get everybody in a room together to find a solution.” Needs and issues go beyond the business aspect, they often feel personal; and if our goal is to resolve problems and conflict, we must get together with everyone involved to civilly find a path forward.
Calm, consistent, and caring leadership opens the door to greater levels of trust, and it also opens the door to greater partnerships. If other leaders and elected officials believe that you are someone they can work with, rely on, and entrust to work on important collaborative projects, the benefits for our community increase. Building relationships and cultivating that trust takes time; but it can also be lost through senseless demeaning rhetoric.
While effective leadership requires difficult decisions at times, it should never operate without compassion. Trying to get someone’s project to a “yes”, salvaging an employee’s job, or working to create better policy for the community as a whole requires a steady commitment that never loses sight that real people are affected by our leadership role.
A continual reminder for me is to remember that it is God who puts breath in my lungs, and it is He who allows me to serve. Because of this, I pray regularly to be calm, confident, and compassionate in every situation; and I ask my Heavenly Father to give me the wisdom and discernment needed to effectively serve as a leader.
Problems are opportunities in search of a solution, and each day brings me another opportunity to learn from my mistakes, and to continue in helping Portland be the best it can be for today and tomorrow.
I humbly ask for your vote and support as we work together.
